When I sent my n78 in for repair, it was the same situation. They had me send just the phone, without the battery or battery cover. Maybe it helps with shipping costs, and maybe they use their own batteries for diagnostics? Either way, you won't receive it with a new cover or battery or anything...

It's standard to not have the battery and the back on when shipping...How did you get your new stuff?? They were all separated from each other...right?
It's a safety precaution to not damage the unit in shipping.
That's my opinion, and experience with different manufacturers.

I think it is in case the battery is defective. Defective batteries have been known to cause problems.

Also, it could be because it is one less thing for them to forget to send back to you.

Usually when they have contracts with shipping companies they would pay a fixed rate for shipping so battery or not it would probably cost them the same.

Maybe they have a tracking device in the battery and they make you keep it so they know where you are at all times. lol

Maybe they let you keep it for sentimental reasons so you don't get lonely without your N900.

They don't need battery and cover to repair the phone. And they don't need additional work with remembering who have sent the battery, who has lost it, which battery is for which phone (do you want to send new battery and receive someone else's old?). Storing batteries costs money too. So sending just a phone (a single, non dividable piece of equipment) makes things easier for them and for you.
