Dear all,

how do I input any character from the ASCII set that is not contained on the hardware keyboard of N900? (Specifically e.g. the German umlauts.) Is there any applet that provides an easily accessible character map, or a keyboard shortcut to enter ASCII code numbers?

There are two solutions that do NOT work for me:
1. using the blue "Sym" button in the top-left corner of the hardware keyboard, as the character table is too limited (and currently doesn't show at all, probably because of conflicts with the mscim package)
2. using German keyboard layout in the Settings, as this will overwrite the up and left arrow keys (which I seriously need for text-editing)

Thanks for any ideas!

http://wiki.maemo.org/Remapping_keyboard

You can add second (blue Fn) function or change it in any key.

Great! Problem solved. Thanks a lot, rooted, and sorry I didn't find that Wiki article myself. Remapping keys had just not been on my mind as a possible solution...
