I had played the movie Avatar on my nokia n900 and it was a digital copy which I had converted. It looks like your are in the theatres. Such a clear movie. The only problem I am having is that I have two black borders one on the top and one on the bottom and they are very very thin, like they are hardly there. I was wondering how can I removie that

Hmm. You probably understand that to maintain correct aspect ratio of movie the only way to get rid of those black borders is to Crop original. Means that you end up losing some stuff from left and right.

avatar was shot at 16:9 or 1:78, but converted to 2:35 for 2d release. I'm assuming the digital copy is also at that aspect ratio. being that the n900 resolution is 800x480 which is a 1:67, when you play a 2:35 movie on 1:67, you'll get those black bars on the top and bottom.

the only way around it is to crop the movie on the left and right to a 1:67 ratio. but then you'll be losing some image :P

you get the same problem on HDTV's. because most films are shot at 2:35, you still see black bars on the top and bottom since HDTVs are 1:78

Not sure how comfortable you are with using the command line and installing programs from extras-devel (see warnings here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=35217 ). If you don't know what I'm talking about, just ignore this post :-)

If you are happy to work with the command line you can install mplayer, it will allow you to set the scale of the video you are watching from the command line:

mplayer -aspect 16:9 nameofmove.avi

Then press f (just the letter f) for full screen. This will scale the video to fill the screen. You will not lose anything, but image may be stretched or squashed, depending on original aspect ration.

Native aspect ratio on the tablet is 15:9

aspect

17:9 = 2 unit black border on top and bottom
16:9 = 1 unit black border on top and bottom
15:9 = no black border
14:9 = 1 unit black border on right and left
13:9 = 2 unit black border on right and left

Ive tried to get mplayer to run but unfortunately keep getting the same error on every file "mplayer interrupted by signal 11 in module unknown". Ive checked the forums but not found any solution for this.
Would be nice if this worked, then I could get the videos to play full screen.

Any ideas to this error?
