I'm so let down by the desktop (homepage) on the N800.
As I spend most of my day at my computer surfing the web, communicating, designing and listening to music I want the feel and look to be appealing.

Nokia hasn't really thought the UI design through imho.

NOTE TO DEVELOPERS/PROGRAMMERS:

Would it be possible to create an application to edit widgets on the homepage, ie: changing it's size, colour and also set it so the user can choose for a widget to slide to the side of the screen and then form a little side tab which you then can click and it will slide back to it's original position.

if not then is it possible to view the root directories and change the attributes like how on some phones ie: Sony Ericcson K750/W800i you can gain access to the root folders via a program and change the neccassary files.

This is a MUST HAVE app, it will not only improve the devices look, but leave room for more developing.

I just feel like everything is jammed onto the homepage and im sure other users agree in me saying that having a simple, clean and minimal looking homepage is better.

I am sorry if I sound rude but that was a cheap shoot... If is not that hard to program why havent you started?
I just started my entry level programing course and belive me if you do not have any kind of background in programing or at least the concept down you will be lost.

I just love when people who don't program comment on how easy it should be to program something.

FYI:

This IS hard to program: It needs pretty much a full redesign of the hildon framework, as far as I can tell, or close to it. It's not how the applets are meant to work. Sure, it can be done*, but definitely not in any short timeframe, not by far.

* = as in, "everything can be done, in _principle_".

I'm not a programmer. Mainly because it's too time intensive, you get wrapped into it and HAVE to find out why its' not working and sort it out

but, I am one of those people who love my 800 (and 770 before it) but am becoming more perplexed than annoyed about why certain things that nokia could do software-wise aren't done.

There's an app called "yellow notes applet" than does what the poster asks for above, and goes quite a way to answering my long standing hope of a quick access note file scrap on the "desktop" that can be accessed quickly and is configurable quite simply to size etc.

Perhaps it has some code in it that could be applied elsewhere?

For the app itself, it would be nice to be able to have multiples of it, and perhaps a quick launch icon instead of permanent presence on the desktop.

I have often thought of implementing something with an easily programmed interface for the 770/N800. I think something like Yahoo! Widgets (widgets.yahoo.com) or Google gadgets would be cool.

However, like TA-t3 said, this is NOT built into the Hildon framework. Like Yahoo! Widgets, this would be it's own interface system built as an application on TOP of Hildon.

And that's why it's very tough to tackle.

The unfriendly comments from the two posters above were exactly what I was talking about when I posted a similar thread about two weeks back. Many of us are new here and do not understand the ins and outs of what it takes to make something work, especially in this environment. If you look at the level of hacking talk, one would think that anything is possible here and maybe wonder why it is not already done. I am sure not everyone here is an expert at everything but the level of unwarranted rudeness towards newcomers seems to be limitless. If the more advanced members can't be bothered with newbie questions then simply don't answer them and move on. Just because you have a particular expertise in the N770/N800 world does not make you an expert in say, military data satellite networks (my world), or any other field. If you want the N770/N800 to remain a niche market toy (that is really all it is for the moment) for developers, please continue to talk down to the new people here.

It is post like this ones that make me think twice about helping others some times...
Taking a simple post to far...
Not everything is handed to you in life specially when you make comments like the original poster did... It just sound rude when people is seeking for help and dont get a fast respond and start making comments like that... Is not simple if it was he wouldnt be asking right?!? I my self ask question when I can figure it out completle...
A while back (About 5 Month ago) I ask for somebody to port pengupop I got no respond so I lefted at that... guess what 5 month later pengupop is ported Is just the princple programing is not simple it takes time and resources most of us have a life beyond this forum... So you cant expect somthing to be done fast... Belive me I meant no harm or bashing I was polite about it but again like I said is post like yours that pist the hell out of me.... And I understand...

We where all noobs once and at some point we are noobs all over again.

My 2 cents.

@SeRi@lDiE,

Dude, listen to what you wrote to a new guy in this forum. Taken to far? Mine is not the first nor will it be the last regarding some of the manners here. They guy was just asking a simple question like I have and others have, only to have their heads handed to them and made to look stupid for asking.

Dude, why take this to the extreme level? I just do not get the point or reason for the sometimes "attitude" that new users get when they ask a question. Is this really necessary?

Come on and lend your knowledge to the mix. If you can help out then do so. Your help and that of others is appreciated.
