Would it be possible (with just programming, NO hardware modification), to be able to put sound INTO the phone via the 3.5mm jack, and then have it broadcast via its in-built fm-transmitter?

cheers!

I doubt it. The hardware is most likely just an audio/video output

On the contrary, The 3.5mm jack supports MIC input.

You should be able to capture from mic in, and stream using gstreamer / ..

By no hardware do you actually mean no mic plugged in? if so, no :P
If yes then a mic is your way forward

So in theory sound from the in-built microphone could also be transmitted, ie a bug? 'Q' should look into this

The only use case I can think of for this is for announents on a bus. Not that that's an implausible use case...

in australia it's strong to hijack small-time radio stations completely (with fm boost) so long as you're on the vehicle in question, it should work

and if it could broadcast phonecalls via fm trans. (which it doesn't do) it'd be like hands-free!!

so if i got mono-out from my sound-generator, i could plug that into my n900 and get some schmexy fm sounds?!
