OK, so this has been bugging me for a while but I haven't been able to find a solution. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

When I go to youtube through my 3g 'contract wap' connection I always get the mobile site - even if I specifically click on the 'desktop version' link at the bottom. In itself that wouldn't be a huge problem, except it insists on playing the video through the media player. This invariably translates into choppy playback and visual artifacting - I can't even pause the video and let it pre-buffer and then play it. The result is that Youtube is virtually unusable through 3G.

So my questions are:
1. Is everyone else experiencing this behaviour?
2. Why is it happening?
3. Can I do anything about it?

I am eagerly awaiting any sugestions. Thanks.

This happens a lot. We need to put this in the wiki (can someone give guidance?).

in the UK, Vodafone users should use Vodafone GPRS to connect to the Web. Including youtube.com

Using Vodafone WAP loads up the mobile version of youtube.com.
No explanation of why.

If you dont see GPRS in your connections - there isnt a way to create it. Vodafone also cannot sent it to you over the air. For me changing the sim and reflashing made GRPS come and go.

I'm having the same problem. I am on o2 in the UK. Only got the N900 yesterday and it worked brilliantly, today I went to go onto facebook and it keeps using m.facebook.com. The same thing happens with YoutTube.

It also happens when connected to wifi!

Could this be just a UK issue? In the U.S., when I had my phone two weeks ago, I was able to connect to the regular youtube site over 3g. Tmobile.

Sorry for not replying sooner, I got carried away with things.

Thanks to afaq for identifying what the problem is and thanks to tiivonen for coming up with the solution. I installed fAPN and set up a connection called vodafone internet GPRS (I googled the details, but I can post them if anyone needs them). Youtube defaults to the desktop site now and works great! Thank you.

EDIT: @Meph1s: I have no idea why it would happen over wifi. Unless your wifi is connected via wap to the net, or you have bookmarked the mobile site.

Ive had loads of problems with this, but finally got it sorted. Im in the uk on vodafone though but there can only be a couple of explanations:

1) Your service provider is doing it - It cant be this as your wifi also takes you to the mobile one

2) Your useragent - Your useragent is sent as information about your system and browser so that webpages can display content differently depending on your system. Download an app called "Hide User Agent" and it will put an option in your settings for changing what is sent. Ive got mine set to this:

Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux armv7l; en-US; rv:1.92a1pre) Gecko/20090322 Fennec/1.0b2pre
I'm hoping point 2 is your problem.

3) As elepedus says, you've not bookmarked the wrong site have you?

I think the mobile sites always pop up if you connect with any Internet setting called "WAP" anything?

Does "Hide User Agent" prog work for anyone of you?
