This is just a reply to danramos on another thread, I didn't want to hijack that one so I created a new one as it might have some interest to others.

I've seen the Community SSU only ever MENTIONED here and around, but never saw a way to get it or to be involved. Heck, I haunt this place more than the average person (maybe not as much as some of you, mind you).

Even though I know that MWKN can be followed on Twitter and that new 'editions' gets stickied in the Community forum I do agree with dan that both the MWKN and the SSU have very, very small blips on the radar for me.

Not sure how they could be both be made more prominent as I do believe both are good initiatives - and just like dan I come here a lot (off and on.....) but had never heard of MWKN or SSU until recently so something may need to be done to increase visibility.

I would challenge every member of this community to start paying more attention to this section of the forum.

I think one issue may be that a lot of people, including myself, doesn't go to individual forums, just read threads off the 'new posts' and from searches.

Then noisy threads will bury MWKN, so that goes back to the separate issue of refining the New Posts sidebar.

BUt it would still be nice if more members proactively checked this section out anyway.

Yeah it's a tough one, not sure how to 'fix' it.
But I would suggest creating a new SSU thread.
The current one is named: "'Fixed in Fremantle' and Diablo community SSU" which, at best, sound hokey.
I'm not a wordsmith but maybe something like "Read here for latest news on community updates to OS2008" - and make that SSU thread a sticky in the OS2008 forum

(Maybe even include separate links to these efforts on http://maemo.org/community/)

Also on planet.maemo.org (and usually makes it to the "main" news page), and it also gets posted on forum.meego.com.

Fully agree on MWKN, I believe everyone who is even slightly interested in Maemo and/or MeeGo should at least be aware of it. I'm not sure what more can be done though (it's already being posted pretty much everywhere it can be), any suggestions are welcome.

As for everything else, well, that's MWKN's purpose isn't it :-)

This still goes back to letting the N8x0 users who just search on Google/Bing/Yahoo/etc for new firmware for their devices know that there ARE updates available from the community. If it's buried in the forums or in a news site that has a TON of N900, Meego and generic Maemo, news you're not helping them find it. You're not even helping them know that there is a community out there to STILL support their Nokia-neglected products.

Until yesterday, I didn't even know MWKN existed. When I went there, I STILL had a hard time finding anything relevant to my device. (There's just this generic "device" section and it doesn't filter on WHICH device.) This doesn't make it particularly interesting to my sister (who has an N800 now) my friends (all with N800's as well) and other colleagues (appropriately, all with N800's--nobody I know has an N810 or N900, probably because they all jumped on-board when I did, after seeing mine. These fools. heh).

Anyway, my point is--don't treat the AVERAGE tablet owner as if they are ALL the same sort of obsessive geeks that we are. Get them the relevant information about the product they HAVE and prevent them from being forced to tolerate the torrents of irrelevant meandering discussions about N900's and Meego and Maemo news that doesn't relate to them. Some of us might not mind reading about that other stuff, But I doubt the average person will have the interest or patience to bother coming back to see if there's any new developments after a while.

Slightly unorthodox (read: potentially stupid) - but how about making MWKN available through....Maemo Extras?

1) You install program A for 'subscribing' to the MWKN.
Could hopefully be something very small that basically just setup a defined folder on the mmc2 card, IRC client (see below) and how many generations of the MWKN to keep.

2) Every week it checks for updates to Program B - which in essence is just the content of the weekly MWKN. It downloads it into the folder and you're off to read it, click on links in it, participate.
Could contain built-in IRC chat, etc to make it even more interactive when a new edition comes out ("Monday is here, can't wait to download the new edition and jump into IRC about it"...all in one place).
The content could be presented more like a website than a regular RSS feed. (It could even include news/requests about events like voting for the Council, etc).

And...of course...
1) if these users that doesn't go to the forum, don't have Maemo Extras - and don't check for new additions to it they wouldn't know about this either - but in that case short of holding a piece of paper in front of their eyes I don't know how to inform them , and

2) An RSS feed is easier and available.

Juuust trying to think outside of the box..not saying its a good idea

If it's stupid, then Nokia was stupid LONG ahead of you with their 'Tableteer' gadget on the desktop. All it did was tell you when something new and relevant came out about your OS and when you tapped it, it would bring up the Tableteer website.

It really wasn't that stupid at all, really.. and THAT might have been the BEST way for ordinary users to get to know that there's STILL updates going on for their N800. Nokia, as is often the case with them, had the POTENTIAL to do something useful and trendsetting.. and instead made it annoying and ignorable fluff.

Without having thought out a perfect solution, I fully agree that there ought to be a mechanism for pushing important and relevant notices to all tablets/devices.

A change in software (incl. security) updating method would IMO certainly warrant sending a notice to all applicable devices. There is a larger user community out there than those still frequenting these forums (which may lead to finding out about newletters etc.).

An update to the application/update manager that supports pushing out important security/update notices (instead of mere cryptic packages) and provides easy opt-in(default)/opt-out to subscribing to the new community updates setup and to further updates? Possibly needed for each firmware version via official/default repos since there are likely to be some users who've never even updated from the firmware that their N8x0 came with and others who thought flashing was too much of a hassle and never heard about the SSU method...

The updated appmanager (packages) could also support built-in links/bookmarks/subscriptions to 3rd party apps, or emails when e.g. the relevant Wiki page for that device has been updated... In this age of internet tablets it should be really straight forward to get such information to the users.

PS. If I hadn't continued to follow the forums long after updates stopped coming and relevant discussions becamer ever rarer I'd have no idea what "MWKN" or "SSU" even stand for!
