hi, I am wondering if there are there any good third party video recording applications for the n900? Ive upgraded to pr1.2, the default recording program is slightly better in performance now, but the jitter is still very noticable. I wondered if that was due to the recording abilities of the phone-or if another application could do a better job.

thanks for any suggestions.

Which jitter are you talking about? In the application while recording or while looking at the recorded video or something else?

The stock video recording application isn't great. It is likely that with a better made app you would be able to record flawless video without the framedrops (certainly the hardware should be capable). Note that none exist, and very unlikely will at this stage in the product life.

I'd look to see what you've got running in the background while recording. Prioritisation on the N900 is not optimised for user experience, so it may be trying to do a sync (or similar) while videoing; thus killing the recording ability.

someone recently posted on a different thread about increased performance obtained if recording on a microsd card - but I haven't been able to test it myself:

Has any of you tried that?

The only other application I am aware of is qik, available on OVI

@maemomatic - that's no surprise. for me lots of things lag when playing off the sd card - and i think i've got a class 4 or 6 one. it's painful enough just playing music and browsing the playlists. Off Topic: What happened to gapless playback in PR 1.2 btw?...

This thread makes me sad. Since PR1.2 my video likes to freeze for maybe 5 seconds a few seconds into recording, then record at the usual low framerate.

Same here, video recorded with n900 is "choppy". Of course my N95 was the same way...

yes, my "jitter" is your "choppy". ahem. if youve used the n900 youll already know of course that im referring to its recording ability in general-therefore all playback will be just the same in quality, even with the best player. you cant fix a jumpy video. i was looking at some of the news with nokia showing off some of the 3D apps and games to be released in the future for the n900, they looked very impressive-so, in general performance terms I realised that video recording is pretty shocking. There is plenty of room for improvement. The lack of the screen vertical synch will hopefully be sorted out, so their 3d and 2d software will still look good up close. not keen on the slight flicker when scrolling-perhaps the cause of the video choppyness in the first place, if it was never a hardware performance issue? with the lack of third party applications on offer, which isnt helping matters, I thought someone might know of anything out there that did a better job at it.

I havent noticed any major changes with PR1.2 in speed. Many people on the board (even myself) believed the phone was running faster, but it would seem that was mainly because no custom apps were installed. As ive added more and used up more memory, its started to get back to the previous level in speed. I seem to be almost back to the same performance levels as I was before 1.2.
Video recording is a little faster, esp in full daylight, but I would like consistent vhs quality frame rates at least. On a happier note-the phone hasnt been out for that long, so we should see alot more updates-hopefully more 'improvements' that dont just consist of the design of the main menus!

@cashclientel - actually one of the posters in that thread claims that the frame rate increased significantly for him once he started using thesd card to record videos. he formats it every day after downloading videos back to his computer and doesn't store anything else on the card. perhaps worth testing
