is there an app to send global sms to a mobile number from your phone for free via internet connection for US users?

the iphone has the global AQ lite which is pretty slick, I couldn't find any such applications, anyone know of any? I hate having to use my ipod touch to get an sms across to my cousins in different parts of the world, I would much rather use the n900 if it's possible?

Well, I guess you could try Web2SMS if it supports your operator. And as far as I understand global AQ lite isn't actually free to anything else than other global AQ -numbers in which cases I would recommender something like Skype IM's.

I am successfully using Web2SMS using BiteSMS http://www.bitesms.com/) as the provider. Its not free but at under 10 cents an SMS it sure beats t-mobile or at&t charging 25 cents or more for an international text message!

So far I am loving web2sms and highly recommend it - no problems sending from the US to the UK...

it used to give 7 free credits daily and you could send to any number around the world, now it charges but the rates aren't so bad

As alienhead said, for US citizens, there is Google Voice supported by the "gvsms" app I think. Outside the US Google Voice is not available

Your remaining credit count is now saved even when leaving the program. (web2sms-0.1.2-6)

How have you configured it? Can you post the settings on how to do this?
EDIT: Never mind, figured it out, it was pretty straightforward!

yea but that global aq sms app for the iphone/ipod touch charges $2.99 for 50 sms...the bite sms is pricier. Isn't there a way to crack this app and bring it onto maemo?
