how can i get mkv and vob files to play on the n900?

mplayer will play those. You could try also try installing the extra codecs package for the default media player.

thanks. i installed the codecs from extra-testing but this made no difference. i will try mplayer.

Try vlc player, its still beta version but plays almost all files

hmmm i cant seem to find where to download vlc from... i cant find it in the repos

vlc can run but still problem the video stuck or seem to be video is in slow motion. waiting for the right codec which can run the mkv file in smooth way.

there's nothing that will run .mkv files right now. best you can hope to do is convert it to a supported format such as mp4 or avi.
