You could reinstall all applications to restore the .desktop files.
List all .desktop files you have by (open terminal using CTRL+SHIFT+X)
then maybe someone can at least give you the icons so you don't have to reinstall apps.Code:cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list | grep "*.desktop"

Could someone please offer some advice to solve this. The missing applications have also resulted in the desktop shortcuts to stop working.. i can only open the browser by using site specefic shortcuts from the desktop.
I have tried rebooting, and poweringoff for a while and then switching on. I'd like to stay clear of reflashing for the moment.. unless it was a last resort.
