I'm just curious, and don't flame me or something for asking this. But why is does the n900 have so few apps? I went and looked through the x6's apps, and that thing has a few pages of free games, n900 barely has one.

It's just a matter of Symbian being around and mainstream for a few years and Maemo not really. You have 1 Maemo 5 device and it didn't reach the stores with the same amount of units or publicity as other phones.

Now that I think about it I'm surprised to have a few interesting/polished games for the N900. Did Nokia sponsored a couple of experiments to have something to show or was it an initiative from some companies to get an early start? I just wonder.

to upload to the ovi store you need to be vat registered, pay €50 etc so it's not worth the hassle for individual developers, repos are an easier way to market.

Not entirely true although there is still a $50 registration fee, registered company or individual. After that it's pretty much free/no cost - signing, distribution etc. It's a bit late in the day but Nokia really are now trying to make app distribution as easy and painless as possible. You can even get Nokia to pay you to develop your app...

If you're distributing a free app on Maemo then yes why bother with the $50 one off fee - just use the extras repository, but if you decide to charge (or want to distribute on Symbian too) then it's a no brainer and hopefully you'll be very rich (or at least get your $50 back!)

I thought that had already been answered - it's easier and cheaper for free/non-commercial apps to go into the extras repository.

If your question is why are there so few "pay for" or commercial apps, the answer is most likely a lack of developer interest in Maemo while it remains a niche platform - the N900 was never intended as a mass-market device hence any return on developer investment is likely to be minimal.

Hopefully that will all change with the next Maemo/MeeGo device planned for Q4 2010.
