I have just got an N800 internet tablet - Fab bit of kit, but cant get the dammed thing to connect to the internet through my home wireless. Its great through a bluetooth phone connection.
I can connect to the router config menu, therefore ruling out wireless or WEP issues. IP Address is assigned as expected and N800 seems happy, DNS settings look fine, but nothing will connect. Have tried website www's as well as IP Addresses. Could it be the firewall? how do you switch it off on a netgear DG834?. Thanks in advance for your help.

never worked with netgear, but i know that linksys has a setting for router mode vs. switch mode. router mode needs to be enabled if it is directly connected to the ISP device (dsl or cable modem).

does it have ACL based rules to allow externally destined connections?

if all else fails, RTFM i guess...

Does the router have Mixed Mode? On my Netgear, I had to have that set for the tablet to connect.

Thanks for the replies, I can confirm that it is in b&g mode, I have around 6 other wireless devices that connect wirelessly without any issues, and although I cant see any option for switch / router selection I assume it is - Its a DSL Modem / Router. Any other thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

I have a netgear DG834G and the n800 is working fine with it without my having made any changes to the routers config (mine is running on mode "b & g" too).

Are you using DHCP?

The only outbound rule in the firewall is:

# Enable Service Name Action LAN Users WAN Servers Log
Default Yes Any ALLOW always Any Any Never

If you have xterm and gainroot installed, try posting the output from the following commands:

Code:
sudo gainroot
ifconfig -a
route
It might help diagnose the problem - the fact you can connect to the router rules out security and MAC filter issues, I can only assume it's a DNS/DHCP issue and the above info my help confirm it.

I take care of a home wireless network that used a Netgear WGR614 v6. I've come to the conclusion that the Netgear simply needs to be power cycled once in a while. We use ATT DSL and have ruled that out because I have an old IBM gateway at the other end of the house using the same service and modem that never has any problems. In addition to lots of other troubleshooting involving way to much coffee and ethernet wire.

I use a Netgear WGR614V4 over here that woks just dandy.

From the Router Status page:

Account Name
Firmware Version V5.0_07

Internet Port
MAC Address 00:88:88:88:88:88
IP Address 88.88.88.888
DHCP DHCP Client
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.248.0
Domain Name Server

68.87.64.146
68.87.75.194

LAN Port
MAC Address 00:88:88:88:88:88
IP Address 192.168.0.1
DHCP On
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Wireless Port
Name (SSID) YoDude
Region United States
Channel 11
Mode g and b
Wireless AP On
Broadcast Name Off

The broadcast name had to be "ON" for initial set up then the N800's MAC addy was added to "Attached Devices" in "Wireless Access List":

# IP Address Device Name MAC Address
1 192.168.0.2 LAPPY 00:88:88:88:88:88
2 192.168.0.3 FYNSPY 00:88:88:88:88:88
3 192.168.0.4 NOKIAN800 00:88:88:88:88:88
Then turned off to help keep the unwashed masses out on "Advanced Wireless Settings" found in "Wireless Setup"
