The n900 gps can take a very long time to get a fix if you do not have an internet connection or have network positioning disabled.

I gave up and got a bluetooth GPS, which is very small, gets a fast fix, and works in more bad recption conditions like indoors, forests, etc.

Please try to actually understand GPS before you go spending money you might not actually need to spend.

Your fancy bluetooth GPS is, essentially, feeding in guesswork ephemeris to give you an estimated positional fix in a short amount of time. It shields you from reality a little bit for the first few minutes until it downloads current data. This might be okay for you, for others it is not okay.

If your N900 already has valid Almanac data, then there is, really, no difference between it and an external GPS in terms of accuracy or time to first ~real~ fix.

I can only shake my head when you talk about reception indoors or forested areas. You, good sir, have consumed from the fountain of kool aid.

So long as you don't obscure the N900 GPS antenna (and I suspect you probably are), the thing is as sensitive as any other GPS on the market.

First make sure that you've set the AGPS server to supl.nokia.com in the settings. supl.google.com no longer works.

Mine works pretty fast and pretty accurately. Ovi Maps just needs to load faster.

Oh come on.... The n900 GPS is worthless if you do not have an active internet connection. Just put it next to any commercial GPS and compare. You're lucky if the n900 gets any fix at all. Before I had a data plan, I remember that in perfect conditions it would work in about 5 minutes, in a city, I never had the patience to wait (say 15+ minutes).

If you don't want to wait, then A-GPS or extended ephemeris are the only options you have available. Don't misunderstand what is happening behind the scenes though. The transmissions are only 50bps - commercial GPS or not - it will take around 15 minutes from a cold start. Period.

I've ~never~ failed to get a fix on my N900 (also in a massively large city) - it typically takes only a couple of minutes unassisted if I use it at least every other day.
