Available in extras-testing as tvkaista-fetch. UI is in Finnish, will translate if someone needs it in English.

You need a TVKaista ID, which is not free - see tvkaista.fi for the pricing. If you buy the service, you can download anything that has been shown on the Finnish non-pay channels in the past 4 weeks. There is currently a 2-week free trial period available for the TVKaista service. This client program is free, of course.

Features:
  • Requests and stores your TVKaista credentials.
  • Retrieves information about shows selected as Favourites on the TVKaista server.
  • Retrieves information about shows matching free text search items entered on the device. These keyword searches are persistent and can act as a local favourites list, separate from the ones on the server.
  • Can support two useful formats on the device (low-quality, mono audio or a 5 times bigger format that has better quality and stereo audio) as well as downloading the shows as original full-quality files which cannot currently be played by the standard media player, but could be played by some other program (mplayer) or external device.
  • Optionally hides reruns (see here for details on rerun detection).
  • Streams shows ("running man" icon in screenshot) - currently without support for YLE subtitles.
  • Downloads selected shows to the device for offline viewing.
  • Supports resuming and deleting cancelled downloads (partial downloads indicated by the "broken picture" icon).
  • Downloads subtitle files for those shows that have it (YLE) - this function still exists, but should not be needed since YLE subtitles are now "printed" directly on the picture by the TVKaista format conversion process.
  • Launches selected downloaded file in the standard media player ("play" icon in screenshot).
  • Resumes playback at the position you stopped at previously.
  • Cleans selected downloaded files, including subtitle files and partial downloads.
  • Standard storage directory is Videos, but can be changed.
  • Stores show information for the past 4 weeks, except indefinitely for shows with undeleted downloaded files.
  • Can filter the list for new or downloaded shows.
  • REMOVED AS UNSTABLE: Can start watching show while it is downloading.
OBSOLETE: to see the separate subtitles in the media player, install package "Subtitles Support", go to device Settings, scroll to the bottom, select Subtitles under Extras, check "Automatically load subtitle files" and set encoding to "Unicode (UTF-8)".

Please use this thread for feature requests and bugs.

(This basic information should have been in the original post; edited.)

TVKaista stores the normal digital TV mpeg-ts stream as is, then transcodes them to various other formats (http://tvkaista.fi/Info?page=viewingoptions). This client downloads the recordings as mp4, suitable for viewing on N900, but about 1/10th the size of the original recording.

Is it possible to support booxtv.fi ? It is cheaper than tvkaista.fi. They already promised to do Maemo version later, but I haven't seen it.

Based on their web site, it looks like booxtv tries to make money selling mobile clients that access their service, and due to that model they do not publish their API used to access the recordings. Thus they might be interested if someone made a commercial offer to develop a Maemo client, but I am not that someone, sorry.

Looks like there's a problem with feed date parsing if device UI language is Finnish. Will try to fix this today. Meanwhile, the workaround is to change UI language to English in the "Asetukset - Kieli ja alue" (requires reboot).

Thanks to Harri for spotting this.
