Hey all,

I have a new N900 coming this week that I purchased through the recent Flipswap deal. I have zero Nokia or Maemo experience.

What would you experts recommend I first do with the device to get it up to par with your tweaked systems? Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I want to not only make this device the best it can be, but eventually customize it to my particular uses and needs.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Xiton: What will you be using the device for?

Browsing, media etc.

i would advice to read FAQ, wiki, and also check the forum, as well as common new-user question (believe me a lot of people did the same way you did, just posted same post instead of searching for the same that are on forum already). and good luck with your choice (i mean n900)

Everything! I honestly don't make too many calls, but I'd be focusing mostly on data use. Browsing for sure. Since it has such huge storage, I'll put some music and/or video on it as well.

On my current phone I basically browse/download and experiment with apps all day long.

I'd recommend you read a recent post form another newcomer here.
Not comprehensive, but I read it about 2 minutes before I read this thread.
Have fun with your new phone.

Start with the wiki, then spend at least a couple of weeks READING the forum. Then if you still have any questions, post.

Browsing the forum is certainly a good way to start - it is pretty easy to miss stuff when you don't know what you're looking for/at though!

My most recent "holy cr@p that's impressive" find were the threads relating to the transitions.ini file. The impact on menu navigation speeds achievable via tweaking this file has to be seen to be believed.

errr just a note... since you say you have no nokia/maemo experience

- If you are after a COMPLETE Flash media experience in your browser
or
- If you want a BIG App store
or
- If you want stuff to "JUST WORK" (tm)
or
- If you expect Nokia to provide further official OS improvements to Maemo (or if you expect Nokia to officially provide anything more then what they currently have)
or
- If you want to use the N900 as a PHONE rather then as a COMPUTER

then I think you should stop right there and have a careful think about whether htis phone is for you - I say this because you mention you have NO maemo experience so you do not know the current history and situation and controversy surrounding the n900.

If you do want to spend the time (and this is quite significant since you have no experience) to do all the tinkering and tweaking and reflashing that will surely be required and you ENJOY doing this (i.e. not just doing it to get the phone to work) , then welcome and dive right in because for the tinkerers and tweakers, there is no better device.

1. Install shortcutd; it gives a lot more flexibility of control.

2. Look at the wiki page about browser location bar tricks linked to in my sig to improve your browsing experience.

3. Look at the Epic MOD thread, or at least at the wiki pages linked to therein, if you want to tweak to look and feel of the UI.
