Did you mean that based your experience Android port on N900 provides louder and higher quality audio? On 3.5mm headphone output?

The loudness in Europe and some other markets is limited by EN50332 standard. The output with a pseudo program noise test should be < 150 mVrms. Androids should follow that too.

The (mp3?) decoders on Android and Maemo are likely different and have different quality. Try also other formats such as flac and ogg.

Actually, he's referring to the internal speakers, NITDroid doesn't have protection, sound isn't limited, this is basically like "overclocking", they might blow out anytime :P
Back on topic, this can't be done with alsamixer afaik, you might need to patch pulseaudio.

The N900 is configured to reduce the sound quality when at higher volumes because the speakers simply cannot handle low frequency sounds at high volume. If you try and bypass it you are pretty much guaranteed to break them.

If it was just a matter of the volume being low I wouldn't have said anything, but the fact they are EQing the audio deliberately making it more tinny, that tells you a lot about what the speakers are capable of. It is a shame they aren't better considering how big the N900 is, but they aren't.

You cannot compare it to over-clocking as its a very different matter, you are comparing an analog device vs digital for a start. I HAVE burnt out speakers due to too much bass before, but I have never burnt out a CPU due to over-clocking, there are usually plenty of warning signs well before it starts to fail whereas speakers there are not.

If however you do not mean the loudspeaker then I have no idea what you mean. My N900 has better sound quality than any other device I have heard. Its infinitely better than my iPod, its better than my PC even over SPDIF to a Pioneer receiver. The only negative is the lack of a built-in EQ, but I choose to re-encode my music on the PC with different EQ settings, which is going to be a better quality EQ than a real-time one anyway.

So basically it's quite dangerous to play audio files in NITDroid at max volume?

When installing the new sound Driver I notice many cut in the sound, especially when you run a web site or interruptions in the opening of programs and program manager when you download or delete any program .

Could be, I no expert and am only going on what has been said before about why the sound is rubbish at high volume on Maemo 5.

After all, Nokia only warrant the N900 as safe with Maemo 5, anything else you can't be sure its 100% safe.

I do think it was stupid though if its THAT easy to break the speakers. The limit if necessary really should have been done at the hardware level but then I guess its another thing they added at the last minute to the N900 due to rushing the launch.
