I never had any result with mediaplayer "as is". Just use kmplayer and choose mediaplayer or mplayer as a backend. Both kmplayer and mplayer are in the repos - I think in extras.

What site are you trying? Perhaps every N900 won't connect correctly to the server. Due Magical errors =p
