It would be useful if You just open a setup / app where You could define amount of home screens. Additional feature would be to define a backround while adding a new one.

+1 for that
there was desktop+ but it disappeared and im not getting a reply in that thread, and the guides for the manual way of doing it are not explained good enough, i already have 8 desktops but only want 6 and cant seem to figure out how to change that so an app like desktop+ (but in english this time!) would be great, hopefully with a feature that changes the extra wallpapers too, (that feature didnt work in desktop+)

Can't you just enter the code again but use six instead? That's how I went from 9 to 6.

Code:
gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/active -t list --list-type int [1,2,3,4,5,6]

i never entered the code in the first place!
i originally had 8 homescreens by using desktop+
then fully flashed phone (EMMC too)
then when i reinstalled modified-hildon-desktop i suddenly had 8 again

i want to do this to a friends phone too but would rather use an app to do it as typing code gives me a headache when it doesnt work properly (which is 99% of the time for me!)
if i use the code above will that work?
is there something else i need to type to get wallpapers active or something?

As long as you have matan's modified hildon home installed then the code will work. I never type in codes myself as it takes ages and I usually make a mistake. What I do is I just use the web browser to navigate to the page with the code then copy and paste into a note. I have a note file where I am saving all the codes I come across. So I just paste into xterminal.

The above code will give 6 screens. If you want five screens just remove the 6. If you want 7 add 7, for 8 add 7,8 for 9 add 7,8,9

This only lets you choose between 1 and 4 desktops

For faster gesture of desktop number I wrote a little application

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...t=multidesktop

At the moment, the app has been improved a lot and integrated in other package, but this package dont'have an english translation.
The autor are working to translate and upload in extra-devels.
For the moment you can try the old version

Correct. You need the modified hildon-home from what I have seen on the wiki page about it
