Hello, happy christmas everyone.

this is kind of a silly question but i found no record on it - i didn't do software updates for a couple of months now because the maemo system requires me to connect my N900 to my PC using PC suite. problem: i don't have a PC i have a mac (well, 3 macs) and they dont run PC suite.

what's the best way around that? (didn't really have time to deal with that till now in the xmas break)

thanks

m

ps. the message the updater gives me: "To update your device to this version of the operating system you must use nokia pc suite on your pc. connect the device to your pc via a USB cable and launch the application"

Well, you could flash it to the latest firmware with flasher. Just search "flashing" from the wiki.

Actually, I found an even easier way shortly after the flashing - just de-install conflicting packages (3D graphics in tuxrace in my case) and all works fine, presumably...

I find kind of the opposite to be the case. The computers kind of suck once you get past the prettyness, and the build quality is superficially nice but the machines aren't as solid as what you can buy from other companies for the same (or less).

I quite like the iPods and phones though, because they're as simple as Apple's computers/OS - and are therefore more appropriate for the more limited use. I mean, as I posted elsewhere yesterday I really am not expecting to need Terminal and vi to do something really simple on a frackin' phone. (While ironically, in OS X also there's far more places where you have to crank up Terminal to do something simple compared to Windows)

To the OP, you could also Boot Camp of course - then not only would you be able to flash the N900 Nokia-natively, you could actually get other useful stuff done instead of running the Fisher-Price OS

i prefer by far cranking up the terminal (also on the phone) over clicking my way through un-informative screens that ask me if i really want to do something and end up with cryptic error messages. not to forget about having to reboot everytime things are just inexplicably weird... windows would have to develop something much better than before to get me to return, otherwise it's mac os or linux from now on...

(boot camp is still not a bad idea, been thking of it for a while - but not in order to update my phone!)
