Probably a well known fact already, but anyway...
There are obviously a lot of websites providing content specifially formatted for PDAs and other small devices.
IMHO, these lean pages are very useful on our favourite toy, too. They often need less scrolling, and are mostly not that banner-loaded as the 'real' pages -- less stuff, less memory.
I was pointed there by German mag, so most of their samples were German sites, but for a try, go to
http://www.google.com/pda, search for something and see, that Google knows about your limited hardware.

imho, the main goal of the 770 is mobility without major compromises. sure it requires some creativity ; )

here are my surf tips:
- turn optimized view on
- turn plugins off (flash kills performance..)
- increase cache size
- use full screen mode and play with the zoom levels

this is somewhat personal, but I hate the way the scrollkeys work, and the first thing I'd suggest is remapping as discussed below:

Well, it depends... I use vi to edit files on the 770.

Unfortunately, I've heard people call this editor "six" which is, I assume, a reference to 666 - the editor of the beast. There is a reason vi has a cult following - using it is the closest thing modern man can do akin to spilling chickens blood to cast a spell ;-)

You may need a command reference, but what I do is load the following programs first thing:

http://770.fs-security.com/xterm/ (so I can get to a command prompt)
http://www.bleb.org/software/770/#vim (the editor of the gods - or satan)

Now, from the menu you can invoke an xterm. Now, you have the power of *nix at your fingertips. Of course, power has a price: You have tools you can't easily use, especially from an on-screen keyboard. To set up for editing, you'll need to issue the following commands:

export PATH=$PATH:/var/lib/install/usr/bin
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/var/lib/install/usr/lib

Now, you can type "vim ~/.opera/input.ini" and make your changes :-)

If you insist on using the 770 as a *nix machine - I know I do - I'd suggest doing the following:

1. Download http://maemo.org/maemowiki/InstallSsh and install both the client and server.

If you do this, it's assumed you have a linux or other machine somewhere to use as a console. You'll need a windows ssh client, I use putty (try google to find it).

2. Create a file called .profile in /home/user, Mine has simply:

export PATH=$PATH:/var/lib/install/usr/bin

Now, I'll never have to type that again from a shell prompt.
(if you don't intend to get root access, add: "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/var/lib/install/usr/lib)

3. Gain root access. As per http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowDoiBecomeRoot, reboot into r&d mode. Use "vi" to edit "/usr/sbin/gainroot" to always give root access (Simply comment out 3-4 lines in that script) and then reboot back into production mode and you can become root at will.

Then, setup the dropbear ssh server to start as per the documentation. Now if you connect to your WLAN, you can use a local PC (windows or linux) to connect and use as a display. Much easier to type :-)

4. Modify the mmc card to give additional storage and provide swap space. This will allow many more programs to run at the same time. See this thread for more info: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...2&page=1&pp=10

I'm hoping to put together a page for the wiki for those who want to hack their memory card. Sorry to ramble, I hope this has been somewhat useful.

EDIT: 5. To fix the LD_LIBRARY_PATH problem, once you're root I'd suggest something like:

vi /etc/ld.so.conf

And add the line "/var/lib/install/usr/lib"

Then, after you save the changes, issue the command "ldconfig". This will update the system default library path to include user installed programs.

6. Check out any books or references to Linux - You'd be surprised how much you can read that applies to the 770.

7. Add "/bin/su" to the sudoers file, so to get to root you only need to type: "sudo su -". And a bonus: If you do, you can setup a .profile in the /root directory to setup the path.

8. Check out bash: http://www.opbyte.it/maemo/

If you use the command "set -o vi", you can use vi commands to edit your history. Bonus! ;-)

I did it much more simply by using the Xterm to copy the file to the mmc card, then editing the file on the PC using TextPad, then copying the file back to the opera directory.

So, run Xterm and type the following command

cp ~/.opera/input.ini /media/mmc1
exit

plug in your USB cable and edit the file
unmount the MMC card on the PC, then run Xterm again

type the command

cp /media/mmc1/input.ini ~/.opera
exit


and you should be off and running...

Great idea. I didn't even think of copying the file itself. Of course, now I don't have a VFAT partition so I can't copy but that's a small loss.

I went the 'easy' way, copied to mmc card etc.. worked like a charm, I'm enjoying page up / page down under the directional keys now. That makes reading my online rss aggregator even more fun.

Which one do you use? http://reader.google.com (which has got quite a bit better since it 'first went into Beta' BTW) doesn't work on my 770
