I think you should reflash it, as you'd learn to reflash sooner or later. IMHO it's better to earn now then in the most critical moment. ^^
Updating the firmware
After reflashing you must connect to internet (via wifi for example), perform update and then install rootsh. You definitely need root before everything else.
Come back when you've done. Lots of people here would be willingly to show you around.

9000, I'm interested, should we backup the N900 content before reflashing? Normally is it recommended to backup using the micro SD or via Ovi Suite backup? And how do we get all the apps reinstalled after reflashing?

(sorry, I don't know much about this. Laptops normally came with a DVD you just need to run to 'reflash' the factory settings). I think this reflashing should come with the N900 manual.

root cat /<path to the file>/install.txt | dpkg --set-selections apt-get dselect-upgrade
