Hello everyone,
After half a year of n900 use, I am now extremely frustrated about my phone being messed up on incoming calls while in my pouch (on the belt) or in the pocket.
When there is an incoming call and the phone is in my hands, I see the phone app screen and all I have to do is press the green button to start talking, but I DO NOT want that. I want that "Swipe to Unlock" screen, which on my phone I see ONLY when I am turning the phone off completely, when using the "power" button (not sure btw, why would the "swipe to unlock" step need to come up in this case...)

As of now, I can't pull the phone out of the pouch on incoming calls without pressing some buttons AND if I don't pull the phone, chances are the buttons get pushed anyway, if on the go.
I am even missing calls because it takes time for me to undo everything that has been activated on the phone while phone being pulled out of the pouch. Sometimes, if I don't pick up the phone at all (for some life situation reason), I may end up seeing all sorts of things changed on the phone when I I pull it out next time. This is all because of the phone's touch screen was active during (and some time after) that missed call. I see second and even third level commands being executed, icons being misplaced and even settings changed. I think everyone can imagine what kinds of problems may potentially take place while the touch screen is active and if the screen is being pushed at completely randomly...

I tried to work with settings, but can't find any solution as of yet. Is it my phone's problem, or this is the way it is "designed"?

Help (

I try my best to help even though I can only barely comprehend what you said. Correct me if I've misunderstood your situation.

During phone rings, the screen will go dark when something is getting too near the screen, e.g. your face. That's to say, when the phone is ringing in your pouch the screen should remain locked, and unlock automatically when nothing is blocking the screen.

Also, the phone is locked again after hanging up. It should not remain unlock even when you failed to pick up the call.

That's to say, your situation is definitely abnormal. There are two things I'd like to check with you:

1) I suspect that your proximity sensor is not working. Try calling yourself again and block the proximity with finger, to see if the screen would go dark as normal
2) What is your firmware version? Newer firmware has fixed a lot of issues associate with phone app, so I wonder if you're still using the older firmware.

Thank you for reply, I will try to clarify:
Phone does NOT go dark on incoming calls, all the functions seem to be in working order. The problem is that once there is an incoming call and I am in process of pulling the phone out of the pouch, the menu buttons are inadvertently getting pressed (simply because screen is "in touch" with the pouch and my fingers while being activated by that incoming call), resulting in phone switching from call receiving screen to anything else.
I already adapted to pull the phone as careful as I can (it's a challenge), without touching the screen, but it works in about 50% cases.
I end up needing to quit SMS sending screen (for instance) before I can accept the call, so if I'm slow doing this, I may even miss that call.

What would ease my life with this phone is if it would be just locked, without touch screen being activated on incoming calls, up until I myself would slide that "Swipe button", thus "activating" the screen and have it "under control". Could it be just my settings are wrong at the moment?

Other comments:
I believe I have the latest firmware , I do update everything when there is a message (Application: Maemo 5, Installed version: 20.2010.36-2.002)

>>...block the proximity with finger
Sorry, what it is and where it is?

As 9000 wrote - your proximity sensor seems to not be functioning. It is located top right corner of the device - near the front facing camera. It is sensor that tells the device that it is very close to some surface(e.g. your face or pocket walls) so it keeps screen locked.
Do as 9000 suggested - call your device and block proximity sensor by placing your finger on top right corner - the screen MUST remain black until you remove your finger. If it is showing incoming call screen with your finger ON top right corner - your device is malfunctioning, so you better bring it to repair center.

Ok, I think I got you now. I wouldn't know what the "proximity sensor" is because It seems to not be working indeed. So I now tested the phone with incoming call like this:
I covered with my palm about 2/3 of the right portion of the touch screen, including phone edges (held it tightly basically) and made an incoming call. When the call came the screen DID lit up, ready to be pressed on.

>>so you better bring it to repair center...
How about warranty? is this something that would be covered? Phone was bought in May 2010, from Amazon.
I also have those two bright spots on the screen described in this thread:

Update (and this is weird...)

I now experimented with the "proximity sensor" a bit and what I found is that if I cover it with the finger or a piece of paper while there is an incoming call, the screen does stay "black" until I remove the finger/paper. I can also "make" it black again on the same incoming call by covering the "proximity sensor" again AND I also see that there is good 5 - 6 millimeters of space between piece of paper and sensor, within which the screen still stays "black".
The weird thing is that once I put the phone into the pouch, the "proximity sensor" stops working (screen gets activated on incoming call). I am 100% certain that sensor is covered by the pouch walls, yet the screen lights up on incoming call, as if the sensor does not "see" the pouch and "disregards" its proximity
In another "experiment", the phone was in the pocket and the sensor worked as intended (screen does not light up till pulled out of the pocket).

Something weird is going on with that pouch.

Also, while I'm on it, but on the separate note, could anyone recommend how to set the phone to stay locked, so that before I can answer the calls I ALWAYS would have to "Swipe to unlock"?
This would help in my situation and I think other users may prompt for this.
New application perhaps?

It sounds like your pouch is letting in too much light can you alter it in any way to make the area around the phone let in less light?

The CSSU developers are working on a possible ''swipe to unlock'' upgrade, after I raised it with them, so that may appear in the future.

This must not be "it", for this particular "magic" pouch, the sensor area is definitely covered. Pouch is a leather and it is black, plus some hardening stuff ( I guess some carton) between leather layers.
Besides, like I said earlier, I can cause phone's screen to go black (which is what must happen) with just a corner of a business card waived over the sensor. This piece of paper (thin carton) does not even have to be touching the sensor area (some 5 millimeters distance still does it). So, the light leaking should not be causing this.

What is currently fixing the problem is, that same business card inserted between the phone and the pouch wall. I guess I can just glue in a piece of carton in that area later on

I also tested the whole pouch for the sensor triggering functionality just by waiving different parts of it over the sensor, while there is an incoming call. Funny enough, most of the pouch's area does NOT make the screen go black... Not sure how is this all possible. I am now in process of "testing" other materials ))))

Just incase, is there a magnet that closes the pouch? I seem to remember something about swiping a magnet near the screen would cause it to unlock. I doubt it could be that, but thought I'd bring it up incase.
