Hi all,

Overview:
I'm a new N800 owner and I'm trying to find a solution for storing sensitive data on the device. I also need to be able to copy the encrypted file(s) to a desktop machine (windows or linux) and be able to decrypt it there as well (usable backups).

Disclaimer:
I did search the forums for an answer without luck, so I apologize in advance if this an oft-covered topic.

Attempts:
I started by trying Password Safe but the data files did not appear to be compatible from device to desktop. I tried exporting from the desktop in all the older file formats but none of them would correctly open on the device. The password verified fine but the data was displayed was garbled. Same story when moving data files from the device to the desktop.

Okay, so that didn't seem to work out but that's okay as I'd rather encrypt my arbitrary files anyway.

I also had the thought to use something like this:

openssl des3 -salt -in infile.txt -out encryptedfile.txt

That may not be the best solution, but I couldn't figure out how to get openssl on the device in any case.

"Maemo Krypt" also looked promising but it's only released for the N770 and beta to boot.

Question:
Does anyone have any suggestion for solving this problem? Any workable advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
-Tracy

I've compiled ccrypt and bcrypt for the N800, both are commandline file encryption tools. Both should be cross-platform, I've used them between Linux & Windows before. They're straight builds from the Ubuntu source, no porting needed, so there shouldn't be any problems with them (of my causing, at least!). They're available at:

bcrypt
ccrypt
