Probably using ID3 tags, as all media players do
Look at MussOrgsky, it's in Python but translating can be easy sometimes.

It downloads art using LastFM API to ~/.covers directory, thumbnails also saved in ~/.covers/.thumbs
Each downloaded art saved as <artist_name> - <album_name>.jpg
<artist_name> and <album_name> - trimmed names in lower case
If it's needed I can add ability to save art in format supported by stock media player (~/.cache/media-art/)
