I can at least tell you that MKV files are supported, most of the videos I've been playing on my N900 are using the MKV container. However, you can put stuff in an MKV that the N900 can't handle. I don't know exactly what the N900 can and can't deal with, but other recent threads here have been saying that you can't play HD quality video on it. (I'm not certain that is absolutely true, but I do know that I have trouble playing the few HD resolution videos I've tried.)

So if that is a 720p video you've got, you might need to convert it to a lower resolution in order to play it.

N900 doesn't handle even 720*480 mkv correctly and you trying to play 720p.
Try mplayer or vlc with OC N900 upto 1ghz then maybe it will play .

Thnx for the reply, I think it being a higher res file is probably the problem. But theres something else that puzzles me, the file i have is just a 500 mb file that the guy claimed is 720p and it is in terms of resolution but probably the bitrate has been reduced considerably to make it 500mb.
I installed VLC and tried playin it but i only see like 2 frames of picture play and then hangs on the latter frame and then only sound continues playing...wierd!!!

I tried with kmplayer and it doesnt play and I know n900 cant handle 720p but this is a 500mb file, hence the bitrate is low eventho the resolution is 720p...

Overclock N900+vlc can play but vlc isn't quite optmised for N900.They just left vlc in midway.
Hmm mplayer also will play it like that slow and laggy
