This is a rather odd problem, and I'm not sure how to go about debugging it.

  • When I connect through a local wifi network, everything works fine.
  • When I connect through GPRS, neither MicroB nor Opera will connect to the network at all, though ping (and, more to the point, Tear) connect just fine.
  • It's not a resolution problem; using a numeric IP doesn't work either
  • dmesg shows nothing; I'm not sure where else I should be looking

try putting sim in a different phone and using internet through gprs. could be your sim card or your provider (not saying it is.. but needs to be ruled out first)

type in XTerm
Code:
sudo gainroot
ifconfig gprs0
I don't know if it will help but mine looks like
Code:
gprs0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
          inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX P-t-P:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1400 Metric:1
          RX packets:341 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:394 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:10
          RX bytes:44557 (43.5 KiB) TX bytes:25371 (24.7 KiB)

yes, i get an ip without any issues. ifconfig gprs0 looks fine, and i can ping sites both by ip address and hostname. i can even browse the web using tear. it's just microb and opera that don't work - microb just keeps unsuccessfully trying to connect to the site till i get a network timeout, and opera returns an instant "you tried to access the address .... which is currently unavailable".

i don't have another phone handy to test my sim card in, but since i can browse the web using tear, i don't think it's anything my provider is doing.

Your problem seems identical to the one which I had 2 month ago. I couldn't find solution, so I reflashed device.

okay, i got tired of trying to solve this and reflashed. note that it still did not work when i restored my applications from the backup, so there is definitely something that was interfering with it. i did a clean reflash and it worked, installing apps manually now. if it breaks again i'll update with the install that broke it.
