Hmmm. Quite interesting quote that I found from PCMAG via twitter

Windows Phone 7 is triumphant at Nokia, but Harlow had some kind words for the platform that could have been, and left the door open to more MeeGo devices in the future.

"We made the decision not to continue to develop the MeeGo platform simply because it wasn't mature enough yet to build a whole portfolio around," she said
Says Jo Harlow at pcmag (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2385899,00.asp) and continues about "N9":

"I'm not going to comment on what's been floating around the Internet," Harlow said. "It'll be more of a high-end device that certainly will attract the early-adopter geek. I think there's some innovation there that we believe captures the imagination."

Sad this may be to read but it is true.

I was totally shocked when i seen for my own eyes the extent of the meager MeeGo UI put together for the N900 so i can sadly confirm the atricle.

We'll see. Of course wp7 has a one year headstart (dev tools), but there were also other factors at play here. Mainly that other manufacturers had no interest in meego (because its nokia's child) and the fact that it would not have stood a chance in the american market. IMO they should still pursue a two-platform strategy, wp7 and meego.

And exactly what has to do the open source MeeGo UI for handsets or tablets with the proprietary UI that will run the Harmattan device? Because they will share 0 lines of code.

MeeGo is the open source project. Vendors take MeeGo and develop a device using the open source parts that they see fit.

and its totally legal. But I am not sure youre right about 0 lines of code.

AFAIK harmattan will be heavily based on qt-components and they have said in the mailinglist it qt-components will be public again "soon".

nokia Qt-components and MeeGo components are different and will not converge in the future according to tweets from Meego Conference.

with all due respect abill, and knowing that you have at least some skill in using a keyboard......
you consistently jump at every opportunity to complain and denigrate maemo, meego, nokia and the dev community at large.
i might suggest that, given a nice fresh install of inkscape, the gimp and a text editor, you might be better off spending some of your energy reading the meego ui development guidelines and actually contributing in a positive way to that "meager" UI rather than wasting the earth's oxygen puffing and venting about all that's wrong with it on this forum.

i struggle with a simple "hello world" in C(++) or java but have had no problems tinkering with colour, theming and UI changes on my N900. if a dumb ex-grunt can do it, anyone can.

there's a reason us folk in the "colonies" refer to your lot as bloody whinging poms

This "code or shut up" attitude is dangerous to open source movement. There are TONS of technology critics who can not code.
