The Harmattan Python team is proud to announce the availability of a full-featured Python environment for the MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan platform. Supported on Nokia's N9 phone and preloaded on the Nokia N950 developer device as well as the Harmattan Platform SDK, the Harmattan Python environment allows you to write Python applications with complete device functionality and flawless user experience. You can even publish your Python applications on Ovi Store!

The Harmattan Python environment is built on top of PySide: Python for Qt, which provides the developers complete Python bindings for the Qt Developer Frameworks, including seamless support for Qt Quick and Qt Components. Qt Mobility is fully supported as well, together with a representative set of MeeGo Harmattan APIs. In addition to these, a comprehensive set of essential Python modules are made available for the developers.

This release is a culmination of several years of hard work and offers the most complete and full-featured Python programming language support on any mobile platform. Harmattan Python comes batteries included!

See our Harmattan Python home page and start hacking!

Yeah, sounds cool and all that jazz, but WHICH VERSION is it? Have you finally jumped forwards from 2.5?

It's version 2.6.

Could anyone help an aspiring developer with some help getting set up with Qt, Python and MeeGo ?

A brief 'mentorship', if you will -- or point me to the resources for complete dummies :-)

If you want to use Python with QML, there are some nice tutorials by Thomas Perl, which are linked to in this blog post. There are also some newbie tutorials.

For using Python with QWidgets, I used this book. The book teaches using PyQt, whilst the above examples use PySide.

The Python documentation is also excellent. Well written, logically structured and accessible. Docs for version 2.6 are here.
