The only way I have found is to install becomeroot, then sudo gainroot from xterminal.
finally issue the command:
shutdown -hP 60
The system will halt and power off in 60 minutes.
I'd love a neater way to do this.

I think you could do that with cron (basically a command line task scheduler).
