What you're interested in is "USB host mode". The short answer is, "no, not out of the box." The long answer is, I believe, that some people have hacked some gear together using spliced USB cables and batteries and the Linux-based flasher utility. A search on the key phrase may turn up more information.

There is in fact (sort of) USB-OTG support available. It's not for the faint of heart, but can in fact be enabled using a custom kernel and a simple USB B-to-B adapter, no soldering required.

Eric & aleksandyr, do you think a WUSB dongle could be hooked up this way?
CNET
Such systems typically have two components: a "dongle" that plugs into a PC's wired USB port and gives the computer Wireless USB abilities, and a hub with four wired USB ports for connecting current devices
Wireless USB gadgets trickle into marketplace

You'd probably need to lug around another battery to keep that metal spinning.

But consider this: With 2 8GB SD cards, your N800 has 16 giggerbyters of storage onboard. At an average of 400 MB per standard-length movie (and trust me, higher file sizes will not make for a better viewing experience), you can have something like 40 movies in your pocket.

Of course, that's only a fraction of your collection (if it resembles mine, that is), but it's still good for three full days of viewing, with only the bare minimum of sanitary stops. Sleeping is not included...

I think we'd like proper usb host for a number of reasons:
1/ external mass storage - hard drive, flash drive, digital camera etc
2/ non-mass-storage digital camera (can't remember the protocol, but gphoto can do it)
3/ communications devices such as the HSDPA/3G modems
4/ comms w non-bluetooth mobile phone for synchronisation, sms etc
5/ serial, usb to parallel, and other I/O expanders
6/ scanner
7/ keyboard, mouse, trackball etc

not in any particular order of priority, just a list as I thought of them.

I already do that. The trick is to use a camera that takes SD cards.

Its not real host mode, but there is a way to connect a USB camera to the N800. If your camera looks like a USB storage device to a computer you can use a device called a "USB Bridge". These have two type A connectors, one labled source the other destination. Hook the camera up to source and the N800 to destination. Then push the "Copy" button. Everything on the camera gets copied to the N800.

I've found two on the market, one by Belkin, one by Delkin (guess whos a rip off of whom). They are both in the $25 to $30 range, but a bit larger than I would expect.

You can also use these to copy a USB flash drive (thumb drive) to the N800 or any other USB storage device. Just be aware it copies EVERYTHING on the USB device from the root on down, to the root of the N800 flash card.
