After looking for a very long time,
and eventually realizing any droid thingy will probably
not have a real keyboard -and- need special rooting,

I found the Fujitsu T580 is a tablet with a 3G modem
which can easily (normal install!) be kitted with any linux.

It is a 64bit architecture preloaded with Win7,
but using a Unetbootin prepped ISO of LMDE xfce (64bit)
I was able to boot into this excellent (semi) rolling distro
which means no more wipe-and-install adventures.

I run LMDE xfce on my desktop so I know how it works.

The first version had keyboard/mouse issues
but using external kbd/mouse I upgraded into kernel 3.0
leaving those problems behind.

Installing gobi-loader and copying the generic qualcomm
firmware from the Win7 partition allowed the GSM (and SIM)
to establish internet connectivion.

still working on the N-trig touch panel,
but expecting success soon there.

having a much bigger screen and a serious processor
makes the T580 a delight for running real software
(as opposed to the fart-apps found in droidland and the
apple 'walled garden' penitentiary)

There are more such devices coming,
you just need to be patient and diligently look for them
