I had so much help with my first question, I thought I'd ask another (after doing a search... hope I chose the right terms

I am using the built in email client to POP from Gmail, and I also use the built-in IM app via jabber to chat with my MSN friends. Both work well, but neither actually *alerts* me in any meaningful way when I have either a new email or a new chat partner send me a message. Sure, the device makes it's usual bonging noise (anyway to change the default??), but sometime I don't hear it, and the IM icon flashes (seemingly at random!). Is there any way of enabling either a more visual on screen alert, or maybe have that nice blue LED flash frantically?

BTW, i have tried mNotify for mail, but it doesn't seem to work when gMail is set up to deliver via POP.

Appreciate your help again guys!

I don't have any experience with email clients on the tablets, but as far as IM alerts I'm not sure exactly what you want. I think having the blue led flash is a stretch, since that is something rather specific to the tablet itself, and the majority of maemo applications are ports rather than things written for the tablet, some exceptions being things like Canola. Unfortunetly I'm pretty sure all of the IM clients are ports. Personally I use Pidgin for IM, and it doesn't flash, but it can play sounds rather loud, to the point I've never not heard them, you can change the sound, etc. Only time I've missed a message is when I've got the sound off and am tabbed to something other than the IM window.

Thanks for the reply- i am using the built-in IM and mail clients, so this isn't a question of features on ported software.

What you have stated is possible in Pigdin (changing alert sound) for example is what i would like to do in the default IM and mail apps (because the default sound is very short and fairly soft)- basically when I am using opera and have the IM or mail windows open in the background, I need to be alerted unambiguously that I have an IM or mail. And what would be nice is that when the device has the screen off and keyboard locked (as mine does for 70% of the day when it's sitting on my desk), I get an audible and visual alert that someone's trying to contact me, or I have a new mail.

Hope this clarifies what I'm after?

Thanks for your help!

I too would agree that, having the screen wakeup would be nice

Well, why not just use Pidgin then? Maybe someone else can help you out with a more audible email client too. The screen wake really would be nice, but thats another one of the tablet-specific things that would require an app written specificly for the tablet, i think. But hey, if someone wrote it, I'd totally use it.
