What is the best email client that you can put on 770/n800? I have seen claw mail and tinymail. Would like to try tinymail but cannot find installer. Just curious on what people use.

I am also curious about opinions on this. I wasn't able to find much user documentation on modest.

Would like filtering capabilities and some spam catching, so Claws looks interesting, but am wondering if it takes too much installed memory (and is that an issue on the N810 - I'm too new to know). Does modest have similar features?

Personally, I like Claws-Mail over both the default email client (anyone will tell you they don't like that one anyway) and Modest. Claws-Mail is built more like a desktop client, has many more options for mail retrieval, syncing for offline reading, plugins, etc.

But, Modest is nice... It's just not ready for prime time yet. It will be great to have an integrated email client that actually works -- which Modest will soon be. But, for my purposes (and particular uses), Claws-Mail wins hands-down.

Tim

You should try Claws, it is the best. 8MB it's not that much for what it does.

Check their site for the excellent documentation and this forum for their presence.

Thanks, Tim.

Is Modest integrated in a way that Claws is not?

Do either or both use the internal Contacts list? Do they notify of incoming emails with animated icon, sound and/or the LED?

At some point, Modest will replace the default email client on the ITs. For now, it's a separate application that must be launched on it's own.

Modest uses the internal Contacts list, flashes the LED, and pops up a mail notification icon on your IT's desktop (just like the default email app).

Claws does not use the internet Contacts list (although I've been trying to get the developers to add that feature forever now!). As of a pretty recent version, it does flash the LED. But, it doesn't popup any icon notifications on the desktop (and I don't know if it ever will).

As far as Contacts in Claws goes, you can import contacts (vCard format) and add your own. There's also an app called ContactInfos that allows you to integrate GPE Contacts (and other Contacts apps) with other maemo applications... I haven't had time to test it yet, though.

Thanks for all the good info, Tim. I tried installing both packages. Claws definitely is more full-featured and does what I need.

One more newbie question. There are a bunch of plug-ins for Claws. 6 of them show up in the Application Manager when Claws is installed. The others on the Claws website look like they have to be compiled to be installed - no plug-and-play install available. Is that correct?

Tim has given excellent reviews for both clients.

Just that, Claws can give you a notification about new mails (apart from sound and led) also through a pop-up (which they call info-banner). You need to enable it in the preferences > receiving.

As far the plugins only those appearing on the app manager are available (but I have used only the html and the vcal).

Contactinfos for the moment and afaik is only used by the 'Phonelink' app (which btw is another excellent app you should check if you haven't). https://garage.maemo.org/search/?typ...&Search=Search

That's correct. However, the ones that aren't readily available in our repository will be *hard* to compile. They're not ported yet, and most of them aren't because they'll need porting of dependancies.

The GPG plugins for example, need to have libgpgme available, which itself needs other stuff, etc.
