AFAIK mmc1 is automagically unmounted when back cover is removed because there is a litle magnet on it. Check it yourself: remove the back cover and try access the data on your SD card. So, i think you'll be fine.

Yes you can swap out the SD while the device is on.
As long as you aren't using part of it as swap space.
As mentioned a sensor on the back cover unmounts /media

There was a recent thread (possibly Ereswap) that covered this.
I believe swap partitions on SD are not auto-unmounted. Obviously pulling out swap on a running system is a bad idea, so this is useful.
I can't confirm this as I haven't put swap on my SD yet. Waiting for my 64GB to arrive.

So, my question is whether the N900 needs to be turned off before opening up the back and inserting a microSD card in it?
Assume that it's probably safest to have it powered off before putting one in and that's how I've always done it, but thought it would be good to know....
