In order to securely acces a desktop what solution is better ?
As I understend is it necessary to became root on xterm but how could this harm the Nokia 770 ?

Hi bitrate,

I use my N770 quite a lot for administration.
I've different ways to access my servers:

1. ssh
best way to access any linux host behind the firewall by ssh into the firewall and then ssh to the host. (you could be "normal" user).

2. openvpn
you need to get root, then establish a tunnel and after that the complete private network is accessable and every port works.
But you need an openvpn daemon on your firewall.

3. ssh-port forwarding
you need to get root too, then establish a ssh-tunnel and then you could access exactly 1 computer and only the port you've specified.


I use 3 diffent programs to access my computer after establishing the tunnel:
1. ssh (prefered, fast, works almost ever)
2. rdesktop (prefered to access windows, you need to tunnel port 3389)
3. vnc (only to share desktops with other users or to access my vmware Server when it's impossible to fix the problem using ssh).

I do not really know logmein.com but here are my reasons why I do not use such services:
1. is there a client for any device I need?
2. how secure is the service (which protocols/ports, how about hacker)?
3. why should I install a special application if there are some standard apps which do the same?
4. can I access a whole network or only a single computer?
5. Do I need to install any server application?
6. How fault tolerant is such a service (if logmein.com is down ;-((
7. Do I really trust such a (often free) service / team?


For example one or more of the apps und protocols I use are available for:
- Windows 95 - Vista
- Linux (and every linux pda)
- Mac OS X
- Symbian (Nokia Mobile Phones)
- Windows Mobile
...
Like that I use my Powerbook from home, my Mobile Phone or my Nokia 770 when I'm out and everytime it's the same workaround.

One more thing if you have a dynamic ip, you could use dyndns.com to "find" your home network. Like that you do not need any other service provider.
