phone history went n900, to a lumia 800 back to the n900 and now an n9.

what good mods are there for the n9?

also using the web, it seems to be mobile web. how do i switch to proper web browsing?

for example when i go onto facebook or ebay it brings up the mobile sites not the proper sites

Many sites direct you to their mobile sites depending on your browsers user agent. If you by "proper sites" mean desktop version you might want to download the Opera web browser from the store. In Opera you can change settings for the user agent to either desktop or mobile.

You can manipulate user agent for your default browser as well. Regarding such mods/tweaks you should search TMO. There are plenty of useful tweaks for your N9 and a lot of skilled people around to help. But please search the information first instead of asking questions already answered.

Good choice by the way =D

You can't change the user agent string in the default browser. That's embedded in the closed binary and most who have tried to hex edit it have corrupted the browser.

A better option is to install Opera and/or Firefox. Both of which let you set the user agent string to a desktop browser. Not to mention both of these browsers let you view a web page full screen, while the default browser has no way to hide the address bar.

Better yet, Firefox for the N9 supports Adobe Flash which will be welcome if you're coming from an N900 and used to a better standard of browsing.

Download homescreen settings from the Nokia store. It includes rotation control, animated backgrounds and other fun settings.

Quick reply... No, I don't have an N9, so beware.
When you use a web browser, it introduces itself to website with its useragent. In order to force the sites to think that you are browsing from a desktop, you might have to change this useragent string - if these websites are stubborn enough to not offer you a choice. How to change a useragent string?

Let me try... I can open either http://www.facebook.com or http://m.facebook.com, no problem, I can choose the interface I prefer to see. However, I don't have an N9, and I don't know how its default browser is regarded by these websites.
Mods for N9? Look around here:
