No.
It would create confusion
Remember, Nokia's (at least at the begining) intention was to make N9 more appealing to mainstream users.
And the swipe UI was praised universally because it was beautiful, but most of all ---> simple. even a 5 year old could understand and make it his own.

So my idea would be that swiping from the sides it would switch to your next program running or show all the running programs in a 3d rotating fashion. Now the functionality would be:
swipe from top -> close program
swipe from left or right -> switch between running programs
swipe from bottom -> minimize program
I think this is just a dream of mine but it would be a big improvement to the multitasking functionality imo
