Although working well over all with basic things like web surfiging and accessing streaming Real Media off from the BBC there's been a few things that seems odd about this when trying to get things things like Kismet, Minimo, UKMP etc

For example I grabbed kismet Alpha build from here:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/net/kismet

but got "Unable to install. Package is incompatible with current software".

I also got that same error with:
MAMaOS 0.1.2
VNC Viewer

Minimo gives me "Unable to install./ Some packages required for the installation are missing"

UKMP-1.5-uktube.deb from maemo just gave me: "Open with: No application to open with". Whenever this happens for a program it leaves me baffled since I thought .deb was the install file extension for Linux. I have been told that Ipera isn't associated with deb files by default however some deb files do open so something looks odd there...

I do have Python installed but even that took a few tries.

Needless to say while trying to figure these things out over the last few days I haven't even gotten to stuff like getting streaming windows content to play lol

Oddly enough some apps like mplayer and Maemo Blocks install fine so I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my unit (and should do an RMA) or if I'm just not doing this right (and if so if there's any sort of 770 Linux "For Dummies" so I can start studying and figure this out)?

Thanks for any info.

I have the exact same problem with my unit (it was purchased off of eBay in around June of 07, brand new). I have had no problems installing the following programs:
Gizmo Softphone
IDEA
Lybniz
Maemo Bluetooth Plugin
Maemo Mapper
Maemo Periodic
Maemo Wordpy
Media Streamer
nginx
php5-fastcgi
python2.5-runtime
x11vnc

I can't seem to install the VNC Viewer (however the server works okay) nor the ManOS browser. I've also had problems with the Gmailmon applet, as well as the sbnetmon program. The VNC viewer VPNC seemed to install okay, but it doesn't work. This seems like a software problem as some programs install fine. Is there some dependency I'm missing? How come some users can't seem to install certain programs?

Thanks,

Chances are you guys are downloading versions meant for the latest OSes. What versions are you running? If you upgrade to OS2007HE (Hacker Edition) you should be able to run most of the existing "N800" software.

This forum'll be your "Nokia 770 Linux for Dummies" book, and the Wiki here is chock full of other info to guide you along your headache laden way.

(Oh, and I've been running OS2007HE on my tablet for a month now (after months of not bothering). It's awesome, get it.) (VNC worked fine btw.)

First thing to check : in the 'distribution' field of the repositories you are getting these packages from, you should have 'gregale' (or sometimes the older 'mistral'), not 'bora' or 'chinook'.

One good way to make sure you get the right repo and package is to get them through here :
