I rec'd my n8oo today and so far very impressed. Is it possible to downlod prorams like maemo mapper on a pc & then install them on the n800 with the usb cable?? If so what steps do I take. jim_joh

You need to install from the N800 application manager. You could do it from the pc via ssh and probably the usb cable but that is the hard way. Post back if you need more help.

I have a 770 (though I'm using the 2007HE), but I'm guessing the procedures are similar. You can use USB to transfer an installation file from your PC to the Nokia. Then, in Application Manager, use the Install from File menu option and select the file you transferred.

Installing by setting up repositories in the Application Manager is somewhat easier to do (although I find entering repository info to be apain); and doing so has the additional advantage that the manager will flag updates for you as they become available (mine updated FBReader for me just yesterday).
