I am not sur what do you mean with 'system packages'...
But i guess you could talk about libraries and packages, that will be pulled in as dependencies. You could see those packages, if you select 'Install Applications', tap the 'C' button at the lower menu, scroll down to 'All packages (Advanced)'.

I thought I read here (more than a year ago) that FAM wasn't designed to do system updates and as such you shouldn't use it for that.
I used to be a fan of FAM but noticed my n900 wasn't behaving well so I reflashed and reinstalled everything using HAM, gave me a rock-stable system and I haven't looked back.

@michaaa62: I'll be very careful now.. My device didn't boot anymore, just afters some updates of FAM, don't must be caused by it, but I don't know.

FAM is not advised nor is apt-get really, like petur said.

But howto enable system packages (-updates)? I can't find any switch, even though it's mentioned in FAMs description. With a change in it's config file (where is it?), I'd also be happy.
