Now that the decision to sell Nokia's devices business is now in its final stages and will be completed the whole thing got me thinking. History appears to rhyming itself here again. Both Nokia and Commodore are pioneers in their field which is to say that both companies helped popularize the industry segments that they were in, neither company invented their market segment but both brought necessary innovation to popularize it. Commodore made computing affordable and appealing to the average person and Nokia made cell phones affordable to every possible to every market segment so much so that people even in 3rd world countries could afford cellphones.
Both companies delivered an excellent high end product segment Commodore with its Amiga and Nokia with internet tablets and Maemo/Meego. Both companies however failed to market their high end products very well and both companies didn't provide great support for them either. In both Commodore and Nokia there was corporate side mismanagement which helped do in both companies. Both Nokia and Commodore lacked a unified platform. Commodore had multiple platforms over the years such as Commodore Dos, Commodore basic, Amiga OS, Amiga Unix and so on. Nokia had Maemo, Meego, planned to have meltemi, Symbian in its various forms, S40 and so on.
In the end Commodore was sold off and its brand found its name onto various things. Even though commodore died the Amiga platform lives on in the form traditional Amiga OS and derivatives like AROS and Morph OS. Maemo and Meego even without Nokia continue to live on in their traditional forms and through derivatives like Tizen, Sailfish, Nemo and Mer.
Nokia like Commodore was destroyed by the industry that it helped create and Nokia while it isn't dead yet its name like Commodore's will be devalued and will eventually forgotten except by those who truly love its products. The work done by both companies will continue to be used and built upon.

I certainly hope not

In fact, I believe it is Microsoft that is in trouble with the Mobile Devices legacy, while Nokia is actually doing pretty good nowdays.

Microsoft is not in trouble at all, they are highly profitable and doing better than they ever have.

The comparison makes sense.

As a former Amiga user I remember Commodore's downfall and struggling for survival very well. At one time, a pretty much unknown Korean company called "Samsung" was rumoured to be buying out Commodore. It didn't happen, though.

However, unlike Commodore, Nokia is still alive and more than just a label for Hardware. They just changed their direction once again as several times before.

Exactly...
A- Doomed companies fail to foresee the obvious impending future and fail to change...

B- Slowly Failing companies fail to implement said necessary change at the opportune and necessary time...they implement change only at the last moment when writing is on the wall...hence missed out on the profitting of being on the crest of the wave of innovation...and are in jeopardy of failure..

C- Companies that join the herd behind the immediate new wave but aren't the forerunners...usually reap benefits but not the excess that the "point-man" compan(y)ies make....

D- The "point-man" company...innovative...yup...point of strength...and weakness...BB...Commodore...etc...unless they are truly adaptive ...they come and go...

E- the "Walk Hard" Dewey Cox company...a true chameleon always reinventing itself before (or at worst just at the beginning of) trouble...adapting as needed and as well sometimes surprising everybody.

M$ I think is falling into category B...though it may believe otherwise.

Nokia has done an admirable job of survivalistic preservation and innovation...so far...falling almost completely into category E...

But like the old philo question : "How do you judge a good person? Alive or after they have passed?"
While alive they may still muck it up ...even on the death bed.
Dead...well it is a little late to congratulate them ...eh?

With corps....everyone fumbles the ball...everyone eventually goes down..
Best suggestion is wait and see who fumbles the ball worst as they go down...
Do the autopsy rather than biopsy.
