Does anyone know what maesync is for?
The description of the relavent packages in the repos tells me nothing useful, nor does google seem to shed any light on what it is.

It appears to be for synchronising and transferring content from another device. The osso-maesync-ui package installs the shortcut/icon for "Transfer & sync" under Hildon Control Panel (Settings) so I would bet it relates to that.

It is also needed for Nokia PC Suite to work.

What the guys above said. AFAIK it's used for PC Suite contacts synchronization (does PC Suite still exist?). Perhaps it also does Bluetooth contacts sync.

In any case, it's not critical to have it:

Code:
BusyBox v1.22.1 (Debian 1.22.1power1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

~# dpkg -l|grep maesync

It may not be 'critical' but I would really miss (working!) offline sync!
So for me it is a needs-to-be-there!

PC Suite is long 'dead', meaning it is no more supported/developed. But it is only one working reliably, means it has also its flaws when syncing different devices alltogether but at least PC Suite provides
a log.from which you can recover all information.

Is that the one that works only with Lumias?

As peterleinchen said, the package may not be critical but is useful. I myself lived happily without it for months until I wanted to get a whole country map. AFAIK, PC Suite is the only way to do it. But it didn't work. It recognized the phone but refused to talk to it. I scratched my head for a few days, until I figured it out and put this non-critical package back.

I had almost all versions of 'OVI Suite', 'Nokia Suite' on different PCs and went happily back to latest version of PC Suite' as this was/is the only one working reliably with older Symbian and N9/00. And it provides a log of sync (show me that for New Suites).

But this is almost OT for this thread.
