MIT SECURE and MIT SECURE N wireless
Answer
MeeGo 1.2 on the Nokia N9 does not seem to be able to automatically figure out the correct settings for MIT's SECURE and SECURE N wireless networks. I had to manually configure network settings to make it connect reliably. (Note that connecting to MIT or MIT GUEST networks is easy, but will not encrypt your connection and will limit your access.) Here is a step-by-step guide to creating the connection.
1. Navigate to the applications screen on the N9 and find the Settings application.
<Applications image>
2. Tap on Internet Connection.
<Settings image>
3. On the Internet Connection screen, tap on Create new connection.
<Internet Connection screen image>
4. Type MIT SECURE N into the Connection name box; the Network name (SSID) box will automatically update to mirror the name.
<Name and SSID fields image>
5. Toggle the Use automatically switch to on; leave the Network mode set to Infrastructure.
6. Still on the Internet Connection screen, select WPA EAP from the Security method popup menu.
<Security method image>
7. Some new fields will have appeared below the Security Method menu; from the WPA EAP type popup menu select PEAP and leave Select certificate set to None.
<WPA EAP type image>
8. From the EAP method popup menu, select EAP MSCHAPv2.
<EAP menu image>
9. Enter your MIT Kerberos username in the Username box in all lower case, without the @mit.edu bits
10. Enter your Kerberos password in the Password box
<Password field image>
11. Toggle the Prompt password at every login on or off depending on your level of paranoia.
12. Tap the Advanced settings sub-menu at the bottom of the screen.
On the Advanced Settings screen:
1. Toggle Manual username to On.
2. Enter your MIT Kerberos username into the Manual username box (just as you did on the previous screen).
<Manual Username image>
3. Tap the Back (left arrow) button to leave the Advanced screen.
13. Tap Save to save the new connection.
14. On the Internet Connection screen, tap Connect to internet. Result: A list of all available wireless networks appears, including the one you just set up.
15. Tap MIT SECURE N to highlight it and click Connect.
<List of Networks image>
16. Your N9 should successfully connect to the network.
<Connected image>
After this first connection, it should automatically pick up the network when in range and connect to it. These instructions describe connecting to MIT SECURE N (the 5GHz 802.11n network on campus) – preferred for devices that can connect to such a network. However, you can follow the same steps to configure it for access to MIT SECURE (the 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n network) if you'd like, although on MIT campus anywhere MIT Secure is available MIT SECURE N should also be available.
Note that other methods of trying to configure the network the same way will not work. For example, using the Connect to internet option without manually configuring the network first will show you the same available networks, but connecting to MIT SECURE or MIT SECURE N by just tapping on it will not work. Network settings are not auto-detected, and there is no Advanced settings option. Without the Manual username setting in Advanced settings, the N9 is not able to reliably authenticate to MIT's secure networks (or other networks using the same security standards).
