Re: [Announce] EvilAlarm 0.1

Actually a simple way to discourage cheating would be to use some sort of puzzle, or maybe a calculation. Generally if the brain is forced to use reason, it wakes up. Carrying around can be replaced...

Re: mount partitions to /etc

The directory you want to mount in needs to exist. Create /media/folder1 or whatever and then do the mount command
Adding them in /etc/fstab (google to see the format for fstab) ensures that your...

Re: So "Hacking the N900"

Ummm..... no. It is a common misconception that "to hack" means to gain unauthorized access, to break into or generally to do bad/illegal stuff to computers. In geek talk (and afaik also in the...

Re: Using mouse pointer in web browser driving me mad!

It's actually quite easy if you know how: open up the keyboard. Get the pointer (stylus recommended). Use the thumb on the hand holding the phone (left for right-handers) to hold shift, then just...

Re: Orange is getting into MeeGo!

Oh noes. This is bad. I bought an orange-branded SE some years ago. They just removed some functionality (the music identifier app, whatever it was called) and screwed up the menu to easily get to...

Re: How the hell do you select multiple emails?

Tap on the menu bar (on the top right near the X) and from the menu choose "delete". Select all the emails you want deleted and tap the button on the top. Gone!

Re: The Testing is half empty

Actually, i think that's the problem: there are no individuals relied upon. Users are in fact discouraged from testing by 'there-be-dragons' warnings. No wonder when i peek around the package list...

Re: Best Screen protector for N900 ( again)

That's because people on forums have developed a reflex to ignore posts written in bold, red, ALL CAPS and other asinine ways of getting attention

Re: Is there an app to knock wireless off

Well, if you're not afraid of the terminal, i think ifup wlan0 / ifdown wlan0 does that

Re: Accelerometer game proposal: sheepdog

Well, there's http://www.freesound.org. (http://www.freesound.org)
I'm not sure about the legalese on that site though. I assume this game will be free (as in open-source, not 0$), so it should...

Re: Protrait mode confusion

A) each app has to implement it's own support for portrait; there is no way a nokia update can automagically make a 3rd party app work perfectly in portrait
B) not yet. i haven't seen any official...

Re: some things i noticed about in the iphon os vs maemo5 debate

(note that i don't have a device, so i haven't seen the colors)
16 bits can encode 65536 colors. That's actually pretty little and is immediately obvious - just set your desktop color to 16 bits and...

Re: Messages memory full

Seems like you have a full root partition.
Did you install anything from extras-testing/devel?
Do you have a lot of apps installed?
Try removing an app you don't need. If that fixes the problem,...

Re: New firmware released!

I think the people who don't see the update have this problem because of caching
I don't have a device, so i can't try, but look around the app manager for a refresh/update button, or reboot

Re: Suggestion: Rename X Terminal to just Terminal

I think a repeat warning is better. If a visiting geek 'deflowers' the terminal and removes that warning, the regular user might well be lost afterwards
I vote for a line going something like "Here...

Re: Severe battery issues with N900 (not your usual moan!)

Could you perhaps borrow/switch a battery? (friend with 5800?)
It may be a longshot and probably not the cause, but li-ion batteries do lose a lot of capacity in certain conditions, like overheating...

Re: recommend me a good solitaire game

There's one in extras-testing (maybe devel if not, but it's there somewhere)
Actually it's a collection of mind-gymnastics games
Edit: i mean the peg game. no card solitaire for you!

Welcome to open source my friend. The place where devs work with and for their users/fans. I'm not sure if they're all masochists. but working for thanks does indicate something of the sort

Re: FM Radio application for the N900 - Concepting in Barcelona

Re: [Sandbox] Protecting private content when lending device

Hidden folders aren't very secure, because some apps might very well list them anyway
As script as simple as
chmod 000 *
chown root *
will hide everything from basic users, and also stop people...
