Make sure that your headphones are plugged in. Open an xterm and then become root (I usually type "sudo gainroot"). Then type "EFF". It will walk you through the responses from there.

Here's a deb I ginned up. It depends on zenity and n900-fmrx-enabler. It also adds in function to check if you need odd values for the frequency. This is helpful for the Americas and the Caribbean...

Yep, only 2.5G. I have AT&T and my N900 reports that it is using 2.5G. FWIW, it works well at that speed. But I can bet that skype and SIP phoning are not going to be very happy at those throughputs.
