It is possible but is out of the scope of my current project because CellWriter only recognises single characters.

The only open source ocr engine I know of that could perhaps be adapted and...

That would be nice. Sadly, the default virtual keyboard is closed source and the example keyboard sucks. It could still be possible, but I don't yet know how.
