Re: Camera Phone competition February 2020: Earth

Yes, let's get Earth Month out of the way. I hope the contests for the following months will explicitly exclude photos of anything on the Earth.

Re: Camera phone competition January 2020: HIGH

Well, the most important thing is to get away from lights. Iowa doesn't have any really big cities, but it has lots of towns and even a town with a few hundred people will have enough outdoor...

Re: Camera phone competition January 2020: HIGH

You betcha - we've gotta decide who the rest of the country gets to vote for. It's our duty.

Re: Camera phone competition January 2020: HIGH

No, I was way out in the countryside, in one of the best dark-sky areas in Iowa (which isn't saying much, Iowa doesn't have great viewing sites).

Re: Camera phone competition January 2020: HIGH

Thanks! The uncropped photo also shows the Triangulum Galaxy (M33), which is even more distant.

Re: Camera phone competition January 2020: HIGH

Here's a picture of the Andromeda Galaxy taken with a Pixel 4 XL in "astrophotography mode". Not only does it clearly show the Andromeda Galaxy, two of its satellite galaxies are visible: M32 and...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 20XX?

You're right - that is beautiful, and far more pocketable than the GPD Micro PC. It's an updated N950, and the N950 had a wonderful feel to it.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 20XX?

I got a GPD Micro PC for Christmas. It runs Linux very well. There's an Ubuntu-Mate ISO image on the GPD website that has all the bugs worked out, so you don't have to go on a device driver...

Re: New version of N900 Orrery available

The github version is the most recent. Sadly, I never got the solar eclipse part done. It was going to be a massive amount of work. I'm very very pleased to hear that there is still some...

Re: New book on Nokia's post0iPhone implosion

I doubt it. I think it was primarily internal politics, and secondarily not prioritizing software sufficiently. Wildly guessing, with no real information at all, I'd guess a 70% / 30% mix.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 20XX?

The hinge feels fine, but I'd have to admit that I have not used it enough to verify durability. I like the tilting display.

I had not realized until recently that the neo900.org home page has a...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 20XX?

I've got an n950, and it really is very, very nice. Much more solid feeling than the n900, because of the aluminum case. It feels as good as any 2018 flagship phone that I've touched.

I can...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 20XX?

In all, I had five n900s at one time or another (I'm down to two). I never had a USB problem.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2016?

I guess we should not be surprised. gnu/linux never has had a significant share of the desktop or laptop markets. Why should we be surprised that it never took off in phones either? We'll still...

Re: Who is still interested in Neo900?

I think the best approach now would be for the neo900 project to launch a cryptocurrency ("latecoin"). Since they release essentially no information about the project status, they've already got...

Re: Who is still interested in Neo900?

Two things make me pessimistic:

1) Microsoft couldn't do it. Microsoft had the advantage of controlling the desktop, and still could not become a third mobile platform despite several attempts. ...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

This is something I really disagree with. Is it too much to ask for at least a monthly update on the progress? I few paragraphs? Is that unreasonable? I guess I should stop posting messages...

Re: Who is still interested in Neo900?

Well, if it did nothing else, the poll confirmed that Dave999 is still among us, and still a rascal. Somehow, in my old age, I find that comforting.

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

I think the neo900 project should poll its backers now and ask "How many of the people who have pre-ordered would pay the remaining cost if the device was available to ship tomorrow?". I suspect...
