Why would you uninstall xterm? It's a terminal emulator. bash is a shell, which can run in a terminal.
bash can be installed without removing anything, search around the forums for more info.

Yeah I noticed that too, personally I'd just disable the system tray, but it's probably necessary for alerts, etc.

Maybe try installing with dpkg if you can't get...
