I actually did the same thing, but with about 128MB of SWAP. I don't really use the rest of the 512 card though, so I could theoretically bump it out. I noticed immediately that things ran way faster...

Technut's right, install osso-statusbar-cpu and watch the usage. You can also fire up xtrem and run top to see what's going on too, but the trick is to have it already open since you won't able to...
